In response to the growing health concerns stemming from respirable crystalline silica (RCS), a hazardous substance known to pose serious respiratory risks, IEC has pioneered an eco-friendly solution to effectively manage dust generated during the delivery of ballast to railway worksites. Tasked by Network Rail, IEC introduced a cutting-edge approach aimed at prioritising worker well-being while enhancing operational efficiency.
In August 2023, IEC successfully engineered and installed its groundbreaking water curtain system at the prestigious Doncaster LCD Depot. The positive feedback from both depot staff and workers highlights the system’s exceptional performance in reducing dust emissions during ballast handling activities.
The main objective of the water curtain system is to ensure the delivery of ballast in a dampened state, significantly minimising dust generation during tipping for the track renewals team. This semi-automatic system features an impressive delivery rate of 16 litres of water per second, utilising a high-powered spray mechanism to thoroughly saturate each bogie of ballast. Upon activation, the water curtain evenly sprays across the width of the bogie, pausing briefly between each bogie to maintain the integrity of the track surface.
